According to the local tradition "A King of the Byzantium exiled his leprous daughter by ship that reached the coast of Ayio Gala, in North-West Chios. The sick girl reached in a cave where she found shelter and a woman dressed in black took care of her. After three years the King regretted for his action and he sent another ship to brink her back. The King's delegates found the girl cured by the water that was dripping from the cave (possibly milk from the cave). Then the King chose a locality near the village, in order to built the church that he promised. However the workers would find their tools outside the cave every day.

And so the church was built at that exact spot, because it was God's will and the area was given the symbolic name of "Ayio Galas". The village that was up to then named "Agios Thaleleos" along the way was also named after the church.

The church of "Panagia Agiogalousaina" was built in 13th-14th century at the entry intermediate from the three caves that are opened up the one under the other. The above cave is is not known in the word, where the under one is in the last stages of its exploitation.
The excavation that was held in the two inferior caves, in 1938 from the British Archeological University and in 2004 from the Palaeoanthropology -Speleology Ephorate, revealed important findings from the Neolithic Era (5500 BC). In the intermediate cave was also occasionally found residues of all later periods. Abundantly it is also the alimentary relics, mainly of animals and fishes bones and shells. Remarkable is the finding of bones from bears, leopards, wild boars and deers, animals that have not any longer exist in the island.

Speleologic the cave was explored and charted from Anna Petrochilou and couple Gourvelou in 1969, after invitation by the Tourist Club of Chios and was con-financing by Hellenic Tourism Organization.
Unfortunately, until lately the cave was rudimentary kept in so it suffered certain deteriorations and vandalisms.
Morphologically is an elongated passage -220m. long that shapes meanders, while locally is extended creating spacious rooms and labyrinthian chambers. In the cave's particular characteristics are included balconies, windows, bridges and saps. The naked walls are plain and full of glyphs from the condensation, while in many parts an impressive decoration of big dimensions is developed.
Enough bats find shelter in the cave.

The humidity and the dripping is quite intense, while the temperature is changed from place to place. In April it was counted at 12,5 ºC, in May at 14,5ºC while in September was at 17,5 ºC. These changes should came from the draught of air that passes from a very small passage, which was found in a narrow chamber in the cave, indicating continuity and a second entry in a different altitude that still has not been found.

The work of its tourist exploitation has been almost completed and after certain ameliorative interventions that asked the Palaeoanthropology -Speleology Ephorate is expected to be fixed a management Operator and the cave to be open for the public.
"Panagia Agiogalousaina" and the cave behind the church is visiting in consultation with the residents of the village.
