The
island of mastic is famous for the individual architecture of
medieval settlements and its outskirts, the aroma of citrus fruits,
its folklore tradition, its shipping and the history of many
centuries.
The
geology of the island is very interesting. The rocks of Chios are
mainly sedimentary and were created in various geological periods,
other in marine, other in lacustrine regions, of hovering
particles -mainly nutshells of small, plakton organisms that
gravitated to the bottom of the sea at layers, powerfully
compacted and with the action of chemical activities were changed
in compact stoned masses.
Also there are many volcanic rocks. It might fail in extent and
characteristic structures, but however they contribute in the
presence of a varied geological set.
Concisely,
therefore, from geological opinion Chios allocates:
- Ancientest
(with Kos island) sedimentary rocks of Greece of 450
mill. of years age (North-West Chios).
- Big
extent limestone regions (North-East, Central, South-West
Chios) with characteristic tectonic -collapses, cracks -
and karstic structures as dry valleys, gorges, limestone
pavements, caves, precipices.
- Lacustrine
sedimentary rocks (South-East Chios).
- Volcanic
rocks (Emporios, Komi, Kampia, Kardamyla).

Two
characteristic samples of the island's geological wealth are the
caves of Olympi
and Ayio Galas!!
